Initially John Reese refuses to accept the offer by the Agency and their mission to search for other vampires to be used as assassins. However, he discovers that he is being watched very closely and if he is to find Christina, he sees no alternative but to join the agency in the hopes of misleading them while he searches for her. He goes to the Balkans and finds Christina and the other vampires from the Team of Darkness. Although he believes that he has successfully eliminated the chances of being discovered by the Agency, he learns that they have discovered his whereabouts and is determined to kill them all. Reese is confronted and finally forced to face the dilemma he has both feared and embraced—to become a vampire or to die as a human.
